When considering an abortion, it is important to be well informed about the options available. One of the most commonly used methods in early pregnancy is the abortion pill. In this article, we explain how this treatment works and what you can expect. The abortion pill is a way of terminating a pregnancy using medication. Despite its name, it is not a single pill, but a combination of two different medicines. In the Netherlands, this treatment can usually be used up to around 9 weeks of pregnancy, calculated from the first day of your last period. Abortion Care Europe has two clinics in Amsterdam and Heemstede offering specialist care for unwanted pregnancies. Here, you can, among other things, receive treatment with the abortion pill. This treatment takes place in two stages. First, the medicine Mifegyne® is taken. This hormone-blocking drug stops the pregnancy by counteracting the effects of progesterone. Progesterone is necessary to maintain a pregnancy. You often notice little of this first step. After approximately 24 hours, the second step follows: taking or inserting Misoprostol®. This medication causes the uterus to contract. This removes the gestational sac from the body, similar to a miscarriage. Many people experience cramps and bleeding after taking the abortion pill. This can range from something similar to a period to heavier bleeding with clots. The severity of the symptoms varies from person to person. It is therefore advisable to rest on the day of the second step and to have someone nearby for support. Terminating a pregnancy using the abortion pill is usually carried out under the supervision of a doctor, for example at an abortion clinic or sometimes through your GP. A consultation often takes place beforehand to discuss the situation and to ensure that the decision is voluntary. It is good to know that the abortion pill is a safe and effective method when used correctly. Complications are rare, but it is important to contact a doctor if you have any doubts or experience severe symptoms. |
